Well, Dads often have to share space with women who don't always appreciate a man expressing his own needs in "their" house, especially when the woman doesn't have needs to be met: having an independent space outside the home, where another man doesn't care what the Dad does, could be a benefit.
Dads were once young men who may still be maintaining the tradition and not simply reminiscing about past glories.

It's more than dads accepting their sons maturing, but bonding with them and boosting their identification with being male by sharing common male expression and knowing it is okay.
History is replete with the suppression of masculinity to meet other agendas, including masturbation (Mr. Kellogs reason for developing a new breakfast food), male identification (thanks homophobia) and even conjugal rights (for both men and women as part of the monogamous marital contract).
