The excuse was usually, "I'm going to shower when I get home anyway." So... why are you (parading) through the communal shower in your jock? Don't underestimate the ability of shame to be passed from Father to son for generations and not stopping even today. Shame is a tough nut to crack even with professional assistance and few manage to receive that: it's allied with entrenched homophobia that is still out in force along with government prohibitions of various kinds.
Even naturists are still viewed with suspicion and relegated to specific areas despite it being our natural state.
