The amount of precum produced varies from guy to guy. Even for the individual, sometimes it can vary. It's not uncommon to produce it with or without a boner.
Precum is produced by the Cowper Glands, which are adjacent to the Prostate and does not add to the volume of ejaculation. Rather, its job is to neutralize any remaining ureic acid and lubricate the urethra to help speed your swimmers along the pathway.
Thickness of your semen can alter. But I can suggest you get and stay more hydrated. Body fluids, including semen, are all affected by the amount of liquids in our system.
Drink more water.

Interestingly enough, I don't precum. I leak like crazy AFTER sex but before not so much. I actually wish I did because when I suck dick and the precum hits my tongue, that drives me crazy.
