The prostate impedes upon the urethra making passage of urine difficult.
The result is a very weak flow, a bladder which won't empty completely, and frequent trips to the bathroom. Waking up several times during the night disturbs our sleep patterns.

Another lovely thing I discovered this week... Some OTC allergy and cold medicines should not be used when you suffer from BPH. After battling a cold, I took Claritin. Needing to piss and having to strain to get a stream started...straining to push it out. Read the cautions on the package: "Do not use if you suffer from enlarged prostate."

Oy. Which is worse? The stuffed-up sinuses or an over-full bladder and needing to piss every 30 minutes and strain to do it? For a few days, I'll deal with straining to pee.

But, here's some good news: Urolgist Dr. Dean Tortorelis sees numerous men with BPH. He announces, now there's a new procedure available to treat it. Called the "Urolift."
“It’s a minimally-invasive procedure that can be done in the office with minimal anesthesia and almost within the next couple of days have symptom relief. This clip is placed into the urethra and it compresses the prostate. It opens up this channel, if you can see that this is closed, it compresses the prostate and then allows the passage of urine,” Dr. Tortorelis said.
According to the UroLift site, multiple studies have been done and "Clinical data has shown that the UroLift System treatment is safe and effective in relieving lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH without compromising sexual function." [bold italics are mine]
