Thank goodness for all you Readers! After almost 12 years of posting, it's getting to be a chore finding subjects to post about that haven't been covered multiple times. Yesterday's post garnered this comment:
"I used to use Crisco as a masturbation lubricant, but for economy, switched to canola based margarine. Super slippery, easy cleanup, but the brand I'm using lately leaves my balls feeling like they're on fire!
Have you heard of this from anyone else?"
Have you heard of this from anyone else?"
People have sought cheap and effective lube for decades. Especially for using any kind of sleeve or toy. Because, let's face it, most guys don't produce adequate pre-cum.
Back in the mid-20th century Baby Oil and Vaseline were popular. And KY Jelly was the one of the preferred go-tos. Mainly, I think, because Baby Oil and Vaseline had other uses. And KY is what physicians used for exams and, being water based, was safe to use with latex condoms.
Then along came the encouragement in the 1980s to use masturbation as a safe means of sexual release and, slowly, a variety of lubes started hitting the market.
Bad part: They weren't cheap. And still aren't. But they weren't all that good, either. Some stained clothing and bed linens, some needed continual re-application, folks were too embarrassed to go into the adult stores where they were readily available; it was either that or get it delivered in the proverbial "plain brown wrapper."
Over the past five years (or so), standard grocery-shelf items have become pretty popular lube alternatives for several reasons. 1. It's usually plenty slick. 2. It usually won't stain. 3. It's really inexpensive. 4. No one is embarrassed at the checkout counter.
Your issue, is that something in the margarine is irritating your skin. Out of six ingredients, margarines contain three which might be the culprit, all ending in "acid."
- Hydrogenated Oleic Fatty Acid: CH3CH3 (in margarines containing trans fat)
- Lactic Acid: C3H6O3.
- Oleic Fatty Acid: H2C=CH2 + H2.
It's entirely possible that the ultra-thin and sensitive scrotal skin is reacting to one or more.
Try switching to pure Coconut Oil. You can pick up a 14oz jar for less than $5. It doesn't take much, you don't need to slather it on, so a jar should last a good, long while.
"Unlike traditional lubricants, pure coconut oil is free of additives and other possible irritants. This means it's less likely to cause inflammation in an already sensitive area. Coconut oil and other oil-based lubricants also provide a thicker coating than water or gel-based varieties." [Bold is theirs.]
Any other suggestions?

I love the picture of the 'skin being stroked! I'll trade hands with him!
Kroger has a house-brand lube that's similar to KY-- not quite as goopy.
Any water-based lube can be 're-activated' by spraying with a mist of water. I keep a sprayer close at hand when playing. Reduces the need for more lube!

My first thought is, unless the writer is using unsalted margarine, salt could be what's causing irritation. I agree that coconut oil is a great lube. I personally use KY True Feel lubricant. It's silicone based and doesn't dry out or become sticky so no need for re-application.
I have been jerking off with coconut oil for years now. You're right, it doesn't take much, plus I like the feel of it on my sack when I play with my balls.
1. Save an old lotion bottle
2. Dollar General get a bottle of Baby oil gel and a good-sized bottle of an inexpensive lotion.
3. Pour some, about a 1/3 of the new lotion into the old container. Then add some, but not a lot of the baby oil gel.
4. Give it a good shake.
5. For max pleasure, with the cap off, nuke it for about 8 to 10 seconds, depending on how large the bottle.
6 Enjoy
Seems I’m happiest these days with Astroglide. Good slickness, readily available at local stores, not expensive. It does require reapplication or augmentation if sessions go long, although a little water rejuvenates what’s already there.
All my friends that don't use a bran of lube all, hands down use coconut oil. The Lad used it on my cock once, and it was rather nice, can't lie. And it left the skin so soft.
I have used cocoa butter... but never thought to go directly to the source. I wonder how it will travel in my knapsack? Hmm.
Using coconut oil for JO can work, BUT as it is a natural disinfectant, NOT for anal use.
Rather than margarine, check out real butter. Land-O-Lakes is one that might work as good butter, like good chocolate, has the LEAST number of ingredients. Which could mean the fewest things which might cause irritation. BUT many "toys" require water-based lubes for best durability and such.
Might not be very inexpensive, but I like Panama Jack sun tan oil, usually SPF 0. That brand has a lot of natural oils in it, so JO is good and keeps the skin soft. Just get the products in the hand-pump bottles and NOT the pressurized spray cans, which contain butane as a propellant!!!!
Have used Banana Boat products, too.
Might consider extra virgin oil rather than canola oil. Many different tastes and qualities. The products from Tunisia are supposed to be the best.
I vote for coconut oil.
I learned about coconut oil at Body Electric massage workshops - smooth and slick and natural. But it's a solid at 70 degrees and melts at 78 degrees. I used to sleep with a 4 oz squeeze bottle to keep it melted. I use coffee cup warmer to keep the bottles warm when I give a massage. Then I tried olive oil, which is very similar but liquid at room temperature. Have 4 oz squeeze bottles scattered around the house at all the places I bate. Keep them no more than half full so they won't leak in case the tip over the the frenzy of a long bate session. Keep a soft washcloth handy so I can wife off my hands - which can also serve as a cum-rag if I go over the edge. And there's a quart bottle in the kitchen cabinet for refills. I usually start my day by bating out multiple dry orgasms as I look at Big Whack Attack. Had to stop mid-bate to answer this question and my penis is tingling under the laptop. See you later!
Writer needs to move on, everyone finds one that works for lots of reasons and no need to have irritation. The expensive ones do last with silicone and only a little is needed. A tube lasts forever it seems, and everything can be ordered off Amazon these days.
KY Jelly Classic is good for a reason, it has been tested by almost everyone and is available everywhere. Go to the grocery store and scan it out yourself. (Go to Amazon and look at all the options just for KY).
Most of these are water-based, the oil based may be good too like coconut oil, but you're going end up with oil on your sheets, and that's where the "staining" comes in, margarine is in the same category, those oil spots just don't wash out. (If I was sold on an oil based, I'd try olive oil too.)
p.s. There is unsalted butter, but not margarine. Hugs and bisous.
Hand lotion thinned with water.
I suppose all the commenters are cut.
I am uncut but my prepuce is permanently pushed back so the head is always free and out, like as cut people.(this is a family trait, my father, uncles, cousins and several nephews all share this)
What we do when batin' is to work the shaft, no lube needed. To play the head, some spit.
I am "dry" on the pre-cum department.
For a fast second round I save the cum.
Comparing bating techniques with several family members, we all use variation of these techniques
I bought lube only for butt plugs and dildos.
@ Anonymous - that's really wonderful you are able to openly compare masturbating techniques with family members, so many families refuse to talk openly about sex at all as they find it embarassing or unseemly and yet hardly anyone bats an eyelid at discussing golf swing technique when both are physical recreational enjoyments.
You can get liquid cold pressed coconut oil, but I'm not sure what they do to make it liquid at room temperature compared to the solid version in the jars.
Your genitals will have a different pH level compared to other areas of the body. It is easily irritated. Humans are more alkaline on the outside; more acidic on the inside. When you put something that is more acidic on your skin it will irritate it. Putting said stuff on your dick will make it feel like its on fire.
Coconut oil is a safe and cheap option. Coconut is more along the alaline scale and goes well with our skin. Little goes a long way. Palmers Coconut Body Oil range is cheap for what you get if all your using it for is to jerk off.
Babassu oil is another good one. It can be cheap but hard to get hold of.
On lubes; a tip would be try not to use any with alcohol in it. In lotions alcohol speeds up the absorption process by drying out the skin so it absorbs the other ingredients that are along with it. With lube and the activity that goes with it you will need to keep applying it as it dries up quickly. Companies will keep putting it in so you keep buying it.
@ T - That's some very good information regarding pH levels. And, the alcohol levels in manufactured lubes makes sense as to why it needs constant reapplication. Thank you for sharing that!
