The War on "Penis"

Taking steps backward has been the fear of many in the past couple of decades as the Religious Right has waged war on sexuality of all kinds. They have especially targeted the male anatomy. Fighting male nudity wasn't enough.

Now the medical term itself is being declared "explicit, crass, gross, and vulgar" by people in the Phoenix area after a person brought the war on penises to light with the simple graffiti tag Penis Man. The graffiti doesn't contain spray-painted images. Nope. Just the words. The story has gone viral since being reported by the local ABC affiliate on December 31.
The photo links to the video report
Dick and cock are no longer alone. Apparently, now even the medical term is offensive. Those who find the word vulgar are trying to convince the rest of us to believe the same.

Now, I certainly don't condone defacing property. Graffiti is not good - even the street artist Banksy is committing an illegal act despite the millions of dollars being paid to save and collect his work. (Note: The below images are not Banksy's work.)

A young woman interviewed in the report worries that her "younger siblings will see it." I happen to find that reaction ridiculous - but it's also frightening to think that society is taking the war on the penis to new heights.

Readers, what do you think?
Is "Penis" now a vulgarity?

I'll take any penis, cock, schlong, etc.. that anyone finds vulgar, and worship it as it should be!

Ridiculous.....just as vulgarizing other bodily functions as being vulgar or nearly vulgar. When body parts and bodily functions are working properly, they are laughable and vulgarisms. But, when the kidneys shut down, one gets anal cancer or the penis or breast has to be surgically removed.....all of a sudden it becomes serious and not laughable or vulgar any longer. Not sure that's a good recipe for cultivating good mental health. We should be able to teach ourselves and our children to do better than this.

I thoroughly agree with you! Why is it that the male penis should be considered "gross" or "vulgar"? No wonder young guys are so mixed up. They hear their bodies are gross and their penis is "nasty". But young girls are taught that they are wonderful and powerful and they shouldn't be ashamed of their bodies. (Ever seen Disney Jr. channel? I have raised one of each and both are just as important.) I am sick of this two way street. Boys ARE JUST as IMPORTANT as girls. And boys should not be made to feel ashamed of what they were blessed with! Thanks for pointing this out, Pat! Once again you have brought a great topic to your blog!

"penis" is no more vulgar than "vagina." how positively assinine of those who think so. Men have every right to think of thier bodies as beautiful as we women are being taught to believe we are beautiful.

With the number of prime-time television shows permitted to use the word "dick" it makes no sense that anyone could be thinking that "penis" is a vulgar word. This country is being carried in the wrong direction by the conservative movement.

@ Anon - I agree with that statement. All we can do is vote Blue.

@AOM: To be fair, we already make fun of Frank Miller for "I touched my mother's breast. It bled on me." But given his homophobia (Robin is reimagined as a stalker who murders any rival for Batman's affection.) Miller deserves it.

Of course, any Batman or Teen Titans fans already make puns on one character's name in particular.

@whkattk: And vote in the primaries. Get rid of those corporate Dems who have no chance of winning.

This is not newsworthy information. The word penis should not be vulgar. If young siblings see it and are old enough to read, then they will see a real word describing a real body part. The word penis belongs to animals and humans alike, so it is not a dirty word. It's only dirty if you make it dirty in your mind and apparently there are many people who are. Graffiti could contain anything. If there is something offensive just move on and get your kids away from it. But the words penis man seem to be quite mild.
