Did You Know

Boners are interesting, complicated things. I found a few new facts in an article from Healthline, "12 Surprising Facts About Erections."
Did you know...

Most men with ED don’t actually have ED. Older men are more likely to suffer from erectile dissatisfaction than erectile dysfunction. This means that getting and keeping an erection has become more difficult and is more frustrating than it once was, but it’s not impossible. [I'd have to say this is very accurate observation.]
2
Penises are fragile. Yes, you can break your penis. It’s not like a broken bone, though — instead, the blood vessels within the penis burst, causing painful swelling. According to the UK’s National Health Service, one-third of penile fracture cases are attributed to sexual intercourse where the partner is on top. [Many are contributed to masturbation. The key to avoidance: Slow down!]
Erections happen early. Like in the womb, early. Male fetuses can experience erections in the womb. [The surprising thing about this is that few people believe it.]
3
Medications for ED don’t always work. Drugs designed to help men with ED regain a healthy sex life only work in about two-thirds of cases. Also, Psychology Today reports that some men need increasingly larger doses, which come with increasingly intense side effects. [Medications can lose their effectiveness over time; boner pills are no exception.]
4
Shorter penises make bigger erections. Research shows that men with shorter penises experience erections that increase penis size by 86 percent. For longer penises, the growth is more like 47 percent. [The "shower v grower."]
5
The average erection is 5.6 inches long. 2013 study attempted to settle penis size once and for all. The findings: The average erect penis is just shy of 5.6 inches. The data came directly from study participants, who self-measured, so there is the question of how many exaggerated. [I think we need a real study.]
6
The world’s largest erection is 13.5 inches. Jonah Falcon is said to have the world’s largest penis that, when erect, is well over 1 foot long. When flaccid, it measures 9.5 inches. [As my brother can attest, a big cock isn't always a blessing.]
7
ED can signal a serious health problem. Sometimes, sexual problems are a sign of bigger issues. According to the Mayo Clinic, ED can be caused by heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, high cholesterol, and more. [High cholesterol...just what I posted about yesterday.]
8
Erections aren’t required for orgasm. Yes, men who can’t achieve erections may still have orgasms. [As I can attest...]
9
Lifestyle choices can make you more prone to ED. Alcoholism, drug use, being overweight, smoking, certain medications, and even “prolonged bicycling” can lead to ED, according to the Mayo Clinic. [We've covered all of those over the years of this blog.]
10
Men have between three to five erections per night. Every night while you’re sleeping, your penis is hard at work. The average man experiences up to five erections while they sleep, each lasting about 30 minutes. [This is important information - many times a doctor will require a Nocturnal Erection Test before prescribing boner meds. It should be standard; too many men get erection enhancing drugs who really don't need them.]
B
ED stress can make matters worse. ED can cause psychological stress, and psychological stress can cause ED. When men are frustrated by their inability to perform, it can make it even more difficult to overcome ED. Talking with a doctor or sex therapist may help. [The more you obsess over the lack of boners, the worse the problem gets.]

How many of these were you aware of?

Your research is certainly very interesting. Great images to accompany it! I've left all that behind me though I sometimes wake up with an erection. Sorry, but I can't tell you who those guy are in that photo. Off to my doctor this morning. Not so hot here but very humid! Have scheduled a post for today.

I remember well all the many times when being still a fetus I experienced erections in my mother's womb. To be quite honest, I don't remember if I was already capable to ejaculate. Nor if my mother noticed it or not, as she told nothing to me about these events, and I have never dared to question her.
Love, hugs and bisous, my darlings Jean and Pat.

I was aware of about nine of these things; about half of those from reading your blog.

I agree that a real study to determine the average size of the penis is needed and I volunteer to assist. LOL! Always interesting facts about the male anatomy here at your blog. Thanks for sharing!

P.S. You implied in the post that your brother is well-endowed. Have you ever written about him in a previous post? If so, please share the link again so I can read more. I was not aware that you had a brother. I think it is great when brothers can speak freely about their penises with each other.

Knew about the size, grower/shower, early erections and diet/lifestyle issues.

On the early erections; you pretty much dont stop getting them. They start in the womb and dont stop. They dont happen as frequently before puberty but once that time hits its full steam ahead from there.

As a dedicated masturbator and avid reading of this blog, I was familiar with almost all of the points, although some of the excellent illustrations seem fresh. I didn't know about Jonah, and suspect that he's not alone with a 13.5" erection, although I've never seen one any where near that long.

My experience massaging at least 1000 erections is that the average size is somewhat greater than 5.6", although this may also be because men with small penises are reluctant to present them for massage. Massaging any size erection is a joy, but I will confess that unusually large ones are more memorable!

I've thought a lot about how to measure my own penis, and this can be a worthwhile activity for it's own sake. See any early blog entry:

My favorite research on this subject is the "Definitive Penis Size Survey" which is more in line with my experience. http://www.sizesurvey.com/result.html.

I wasn't really aware that "small penises grow more," but it makes sense.

I learned at an early age, when slyly checking out penises in the locker room, to check for the amount of wrinkly skin on the shaft of a soft penis. My theory is, the more extra skin, the more potential for lengthening when it gets hard. Sadly, I haven't been able to test this theory on every penis I see, but in general it seems to hold up. (Sometimes the extra skin goes into girth, too, not just length.)

As far as penile injuries: don't forget about the suspensory ligament of the penis! Pulling your boner down to let it go "boing" back up is fun, but if you pull it down too hard it's possible to snap that ligament. If that is snapped, your cock may still get hard but it won't be able to get up. So be careful when having energetic sex, whether alone or with someone else! (It seems to me that it would become uncomfortable and painful before it reached the snapping point; but people have different pain tolerances and of course some people enjoy pain/discomfort during sex... so if you're one of those, try to remain rational about the possibility of self-injury when you're caught up in the moment.)
